I’ve Had an Idea…Your Thoughts Please…

Our faith community is just getting started here in South Beach. We have one connect group started and we are moving towards starting more. I thought about incorporating a movie club with a new small group. The group would watch a particular movie and come together and discuss it in a spiritual context. Keep in mind most of our new group would not be believers but I would strive to move the conversation to the more spiritual meanings of the movie, not just the surface. I expect that I would have opportunities to share the gospel through the conversations. I know that some of the people I have met would be more likely to come to a “movie club” rather than a bible study. I think this would be a good idea but I need some help fleshing it out. Please leave your thoughts and any suggestions for movies or other creative ideas that have worked for you.

I have been thinking about that same concept of the movies also. There is a book called Eyes Wide Open By __________ Romanawski This guy is talking about how Christians need to engage the culture in the arts. He has a great guide in the appendix in asking critical questions in evaluating art. Although it is from a Christian perspective there are many questions that can be asked by anyone. I found a link to the appendix online. http://www.ransomfellowship.org/Movies_Questions.html
If I don’t see you tomorrow (at IMN) ask Tommy for my number so we can discuss implementing something like this. Even if it is just done once for pure experimental purposes.

Brian Orme, a well-known leader and writer, has been doing this for some time. Go to his blog Deeper and scroll down to see his “Film Church” Section of blog posts.
The idea is a great one I think if you pursue talking not just about “spiritual things” but about Truth. Then success is talking about healthy relationships, about loving others and about spiritual things. (You may have meant this, but spiritual is a vague word these days.)
